Got No Taste For The Liquor 5/99 © Brian Straub Chorus Well the first time that I met her, my heart it did moan Ten long years on my owns’ a long time to be ‘lone She had short red hair fine as the finest silk When she run her hands through it I swear it’d make roses wilt She got big, beautiful eyes deep as the deepest mine Make a grown man fall to his knees and do most anything Chorus But I got no taste for the liquor boys and I got no taste for the wine I am drunk and I am high ‘cause I know that sweet girls mine We hit the road in my fifty ford across the country in the spring We had a little trouble in Utah, but my heart it still rings She got crazy ideas runnin’ all around her hear I didn’t know ‘til I was robbin’ banks and some boy wound up dead Chorus Now I’m sittin’ here in this electric chair the judge says I must die But I wouldn’t change not a single thing not even all her lies She went back to her mama back home in Tennessee And I know I’d die twice if she found another fool like me Chorus (2x)

Lookin’ for Jesus © Brian Straub 2/00 Well it’s funny the state of mind the time of day can put me in Well I’m a regular boring boy all day and a nighttime filled with sin I said a nighttime filled with sin The smell of hair and the sight of breast send me spinning down a hole I go stompin’ all over this ol’ town ‘til the dawn takes its toll I said the dawn will take its toll Chorus and I’m lookin’ for Jesus, have you seen him anywhere? I gotta purge myself of lust and all those common cares And the bottle don’t help me, and I can’t get the girls So I’m lookin’ for Jesus to straighten my ragged world mm mm hmm mm And I make drunk calls to old friends in the middle of the night I say things on their answering machine that I’d never mean in daylight well I sure don’t mean in daylight And I’m so goddamn lonely that even Hank could not describe Yeah I’m so fuckin’ lonely it feels like my heart shriveled up and died I said my heart shriveled up and died E – four separate muted strokes Chorus 1st two lines – same as above and my chest has been hurtin’ me, doc says it ain’t a heart attack so I’m lookin’ for Jesus to put me back on track mm mm hmm mm and I’m one bullet shy of havin’ a good day but I’d just blow my load or misfire things seem to work out that way yeah they seem to work out that way repeat chorus 2 repeat last line 2 more times mm mm hmm mm

Texas Chemical Skyline © Brian Straub 1/24/93 Verse 1 I got tired of playing that careless government’s game So I set out on the road, but everywhere I go it’s just the same And I’m driving under a Texas chemical skyline And I’m looking for anything that’s mine Verse 2 I’m looking for some answers will anyone talk to me? I’m just rehashing some pain and ancient jealousy And I’m driving under a Texas chemical skyline And I’m looking for anything that’s mine Bridge And sometimes I feel so alone But I know in my soul that I can’t go home ‘til I find what’s down the road Verse 3 I don’t wanna be controlled by your TV or your dollar sign I can’t even conform to your ridiculous timeline And I’m driving under a Texas chemical skyline And I’m looking for anything that’s mine Verse 4 I guess I can’t run away from what’s inside It all comes rushing back at me like a rising tide And I’m driving under a Texas chemical skyline And I’m looking for anything that’s mine Bridge Chorus 2x

Second Hand Sundown © Brian Straub 5/19/02 I’m here to tell you now fellas about a woman so fine She ain’t yours, she ain’t his ‘cause right now she’s mine She keeps me in line and she keeps me well fed She cleans out the cobwebs that cloud up my head Chorus She’s my second hand sundown when the day is too long She don’t scream, she don’t holler ‘cept when we get it on Verse 2 She’s been ‘round the world there ain’t much she ain’t done She laughs like a child and lives just as young Checkered soul, a checkered past still haunt her today She loses her balance, but still knows the way Chorus Verse 3 I listen to her eyes when the night is still young And they say the same things when the morning has come She treats me so fine like I’ve never known Like a dog in the alley that finds a new home
5.
Misleading Sighs © Bran Straub 1/11/93 Verse 1 I thought you and me could’ve had something fine It’s been so long and I finally see, you were just killing time And through your alcohol haze of disillusion I went through countless days of needless confusion Chorus And I just found out that you’ve been telling lies Yeah I just found out about your bedroom eyes Verse 2 All I wanted was to be me, you wanted us to be you And if I wanted to play I had to follow your rules Taken by storm or runaway train I thought it would lead up to something more sane Chorus Bridge And I really think that you should take responsibility for what you do Don’t try to blame me for what alcohol has helped you to be Verse 3 If you wanted me as just a friend Then how could it be that it happened again I heard these accusations and it blew my mind I should’ve seen it coming, but I liked you and so I was blind Chorus 2x or more
6.
Rock & Roll Loser © Brian Straub 8/27/89 I always called you a winner Now I know you’re just a sinner Take a whole lotta time make me feel like a fool Take every little dime leave me on an old barstool Everyday you said that you love me I guess you think you are above me Tell me that you’re mine never leave me alone We’ll spend a lifetime build a pretty little home Chorus You’re a rock & roll loser Drug addict and boozer Two timin’ little floozy And I wish you well when you go to hell oh no girl Repeat Chorus Never thought I’d lose out to rock & roll But now I’m empty and you’ve got my soul Never break my heart seein’ another man Said we’ll never part I just don’t understand Repeat 1st Verse Chorus 2x
7.
Blood On My Humbuckers © Brian Straub 11/30/93 You got your brand new leather jacket You don’t care what anyone says All your so-called friends Are the ones that know best Chorus But when you fall, where do you think they’ll be? Turning their backs as you look for me Woah woh woh I got blood on my humbuckers I’m gonna keep my pedestal You wanna show me you love me, but you are too cool Well I guess you’re in the movies But you can change the lines This is real life and People really die Chorus Maybe you don’t know But I see diamonds in your eyes You got the rainbows gold Underneath your disguise Chorus I said you are too cool, yeah you’re so goddamn cool, yeah you are too cool

about

This is the first real band I ever had playing my material. It was also my first band in Seattle. It was a real thrill to hear my songs really come to life for the first time. This is the first time all but one of these songs have been available online.

Recorded, produced, mixed, and Mastered by Julian Martlew at the Art Institute of Seattle.

about

Braintwang Seattle, Washington

From Baltimore to Seattle, I've been writing songs for over 30 years and have built up a body of work. My two previous bands, Armadillo Borealis and Secondhand Sunday, performed and recorded some of my songs that are represented here. This year (2016), I started Dog House Prayers and began documenting more of my songs through home recording. ... more
